10 years ago, my husband Tommy and I were just two city-raised kids who had hardly even seen a farm animal in person, much less raised or butchered one. We’d never planted a seed. Never harvested any fresh vegetable.
We were out of touch with
where our food came from and we knew it. But we wanted to have that connection and that security of being able to raise our own to feed ourselves, and our growing family.
So we started with a small garden and learned to can and preserve from it. But we knew that to really sustain ourselves we needed to raise our own protein too. We added layer chickens for eggs. And finally a few years later, bought 16 meat chickens.
We lost a few during their grow out, and when processing day came - it took us almost 8 hours to get through all of the ones that were left. The learning curve was steep! We weren’t sure how we’d ever grow a substantial amount of meat to fulfill our families needs!
Years later now, we raise and process hundreds of birds every summer. We’ve also expanded to raise and/or process all our own pork, much of our beef, turkeys, venison, and most recently - rabbits!
We have made a lot of mistakes - and through them learned a lot about raising our own meat.
Going out of our comfort zone has become one of the most fulfilling, empowering, and humbling decision we’ve ever made. Our seven kids have learned right along side us, gaining back the skills lost from past generations.
Now, we truly enjoy working together as a family - from getting ready for new babies to even butchering time. It’s a team effort that we all enjoy accomplishing together.
And at the end - we all get to reap the rewards of our hardwork (by eating DELICIOUS food!)
