What platform is best for marketing your Homestead Business?

It’s no secret, I’m a big fan of using social media to make more money from our homestead.

Though the majority of our marketing is done through our Facebook page — I actually didn’t even have a Facebook account for years. I started one in 2018 with the sole goal of being able to sell more from our property since going to Farmer’s Markets wasn’t an option.

But when aiming to use social media to market your homestead — which platform is best?

In my opinion - it’s between two: Facebook or Instagram.

Facebook

If you are offering local-based products or services (Think eggs, flowers, chicken butchering, veggies, etc), Facebook is by far the best platform to be able to target those near you.

Instagram

If you are offering items that you intend to ship (Think handmade items: Soap, Sourdough starter, crocheted goods, etc). - Instagram might be a better way to reach a broad amount of people.

I primarily sell our homestead goods on Facebook.

If you decide to do Facebook - Just go to your account screen “create a profile/page” with your homestead name (ours is very creative - it’s just “The Declercq Homestead”)

If IG - start a new account (I prefer to “creator” option) with your homestead name.

One More Quick Tip:

You may be thinking — why not just set up an account on all of them? I see farms on Instagram, Facebook, Youtube, X, and TikTok.

My recommendation: Just pick one. Each platform is INCREDIBLY different in how the algorithm works. It’s better to put all your energy into mastering one vs. half-trying all of them.

You can always add more later once you gain consistency and confidence using one (but really, I’ve been doing this 7 years now and still haven’t branched out from FB!)

Happy Homesteading!
